About Todd Kelly, owner, baker

"My passion for baking was born shortly after graduating college, when I began working as a financial analyst. I soon realized my days would be buried in spreadsheets and numbers, with no outlet for my creative energy."

Inspired by a program on the Food Network, I tried baking as a way to scratch my creative itch. I spent many weekends perfecting old recipes and creating new ones. Come Monday mornings, much to my coworker’s delight, I would bring the results of a weekends worth of baking.

The feedback was more than I ever could have expected. Word spread at work and soon, people from every department and floor would come by my desk hoping to get a taste of whatever I had brought in that week. I noticed the brownies, in particular created the most buzz.
The drive to bake a better brownie was born.

Family, friends, and even colleagues started to tell me I had missed my calling, and should start my own business selling my delicious treats. It was nice to hear, but I never really considered leaving my job to bake brownies for a living.

While working in corporate America, and earning my Masters in Business, I felt something was missing in my career. I wanted to be truly passionate about my day-to-day job, my career. In what can only be described as an “awakening,” in July 2007, I decided was time to turn my passion for baking into a career. I owed it to myself to try, as they say, “Better to have loved and lost then never to have loved at all”. So, with the support and encouragement of my wife, Kes, I quit my job and we moved to Philadelphia, with a mission and a passion.

Better Together was born.

With my wife, I have been able to follow my passion. Kes provides support and encouragement and is the inspiration behind the name of my baking company (see below for the full story).

It is my sincere wish that in every bite of any of our creations you can taste the passion the dreams and history that lay inside.

about our name

Todd’s wife Kestra truly is the driving force behind Better Together, and for that matter, Todd. Kestra has always said that, individually, they are great, but they are truly better together. In fact, the song Better Together, by Jack Johnson, was the song they first danced to as husband and wife on their wedding day.

When Todd began to brainstorm business names, Kes, without hesitation, told him, “You need to call it Better Together.” He thought that was perfect, because at the end of the day the two of them are the business and they truly are better together.
